Essex County Jail
The Old Essex County Jail in Newark, NJ, was originally built in 1837 and closed in 1970 when a new jail was completed during the police riots of the 70s. The Essex County Jail complex features four large holding buildings each 3 stories tall, a kitchen that has now collapsed, a hospital wing and the Warden’s residence. Inside the basement rests hundreds of used tires, most likely from the jail’s old workshop.
