Abandoned Upstate Hospital

The hospital opened its doors in 1919 and played an important part in the lives of everyone who lived in the surrounding villages and areas. In 1966 and 1983, two new hospital wings were constructed and a skilled nursing facility was also added in 1971.

However, as methods in the delivery of modern medical care dramatically improved, it proved difficult for the rural hospital to stay open while keeping up with the increasing cost of maintenance. Patients also required more specialized care that could only be obtained at larger institutions. With decreasing patient numbers and cost of care, the hospital was forced to close its doors in 2003.
